Interviewing

Case Interview

A case interview is a problem-solving assessment where candidates analyze a business scenario and present a structured recommendation, common in consulting and strategy roles.

A case interview presents you with a business problem — such as "Should Company X enter the European market?" or "How would you increase profitability at a struggling retail chain?" — and evaluates how you structure your analysis, identify key factors, use data, and arrive at a recommendation. Case interviews are the primary evaluation method at management consulting firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and are increasingly used in strategy, product management, and business operations roles.

Case interviews test several skills simultaneously: structured problem-solving (can you break a complex problem into manageable components?), analytical thinking (can you interpret data and draw logical conclusions?), business acumen (do you understand market dynamics, P&L drivers, and strategic trade-offs?), and communication (can you present your thinking clearly and concisely?).

Preparation requires learning standard frameworks (profitability analysis, market entry, M&A evaluation), practicing with realistic cases (use resources like Case in Point, PrepLounge, or company-specific prep guides), and developing mental math skills for estimation questions. The key is to demonstrate a clear thought process — ask clarifying questions, state your assumptions, walk through your logic step by step, and synthesize your findings into a clear recommendation.
