PLAIN ENGLISH

What it means

01

Resume keywords are the specific terms, skills, qualifications, and phrases that appear in a job posting and that an employer considers essential for the role. These include hard skills (Python, SQL, Salesforce), certifications (PMP, CPA), industry terms (HIPAA compliance, Agile methodology), soft skills (cross-functional collaboration), and job-specific terminology.

02

ATS software scans your resume for these keywords and uses them to determine how well your profile matches the job requirements. Some systems use simple keyword matching, while more sophisticated ones analyze context and synonyms. Either way, including relevant keywords from the job description in your resume significantly increases your chances of passing the automated screening stage.

03

The key to effective keyword optimization is natural integration. Place keywords in your professional summary, skills section, and work experience bullet points where they fit organically. Never sacrifice readability for keyword density — recruiters who review your resume after the ATS will immediately notice unnatural phrasing or obvious keyword stuffing.
