Single Column Layout

A single column layout is a resume format that arranges all content in one vertical column, ensuring maximum compatibility with ATS parsing software.

A single column layout organizes all resume content in one continuous vertical flow, from top to bottom, without sidebars, parallel columns, or floating text elements. This straightforward structure is the most reliable format for ATS compatibility because parsing software reads content sequentially from top to bottom.

Multi-column layouts — where skills might appear in a left sidebar alongside work experience in a wider right column — can confuse ATS parsers. The software may read across columns rather than down each one, jumbling your work experience with unrelated sidebar content. Some systems skip sidebar content entirely, causing you to lose important information.

A single column layout does not have to look plain or unprofessional. You can create visual interest through strategic use of font weights, subtle horizontal dividers between sections, small amounts of color in section headings, and well-proportioned white space. Many professional resume templates achieve an attractive, modern look while maintaining a single column structure. If visual design is important for your industry, consider having a separate portfolio or creative resume for in-person networking, while using a single column version for online applications.
