Frequently Asked Questions
The directional model uses 2025 US market data compiled from public occupational statistics and major compensation-reporting sources. The methodology was reviewed in September 2026. These broad estimates are not live employer data or guaranteed offers.
Use the 50th percentile (median) as your baseline expectation, and the 75th percentile as your stretch target. If you have strong qualifications, specialized skills, or competing offers, you have leverage to push above median. Always negotiate total compensation, not just base salary.
Total compensation includes base salary plus bonuses (annual, signing, performance), stock compensation (RSUs, options), and sometimes other cash-equivalent benefits. It does not include health insurance, retirement matching, or other non-cash perks.
High-cost-of-living areas (San Francisco, New York, Boston) command the highest salaries. Medium-cost cities (Austin, Denver, Atlanta) typically pay 10-20% less. Lower-cost areas (Midwest, South) may pay 25-30% less. Remote roles often use a blended rate, roughly 10% below top-market pay.
Actual compensation varies widely based on company size, industry (finance and tech pay more), specific sub-role, years of experience within a level, education, certifications, negotiation skill, and the current job market. These estimates represent broad market averages across industries.
