The education section is the part of a resume that lists academic credentials including degrees, institutions, graduation dates, and relevant academic achievements.
The education section documents your academic background, typically including the degree earned, institution name, graduation year, and optionally your GPA, honors, relevant coursework, or academic projects. Its placement and detail level depend on your career stage.
For recent graduates (within 1-3 years of graduation), the education section often appears near the top of the resume, sometimes before work experience, especially if the degree is highly relevant to the role. Include GPA if it is 3.5 or above, relevant coursework, academic honors, and significant projects. For experienced professionals, education moves below work experience and is condensed to just the degree, school, and year.
List degrees in reverse chronological order. If you hold an advanced degree, you can generally omit your high school education. For degrees in progress, list the expected graduation date. Certifications, professional development courses, and bootcamps can go in this section or in a separate certifications section. If you did not complete a degree, you can list the institution, years attended, and relevant coursework completed.
