A lateral move is a job change to a different role or department at the same level of seniority, used to broaden skills and experience without a promotion.

A lateral move is a transition to a new role or department within your company — or to a comparable role at a different company — at roughly the same level of responsibility and compensation. While it is not a promotion in the traditional sense, a lateral move can be a strategic career decision that positions you for future advancement.

Common reasons for making a lateral move include gaining cross-functional experience (moving from engineering to product management), exploring a new industry or business area, developing skills that are prerequisites for the next promotion, escaping a dead-end role or difficult manager while staying at a company you value, or transitioning toward a career you find more fulfilling.

On your resume, frame lateral moves positively by emphasizing the expanded skills, new perspectives, and broader organizational understanding you gained. A hiring manager reviewing your resume should see lateral moves as evidence of versatility and initiative, not stagnation. If the move was internal, highlight how the breadth of experience gives you a more complete view of the business. If it was external, connect the dots between how each role built toward your current career direction.
