A video interview is a remote interview conducted over video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet, either live or as a pre-recorded assessment.
A video interview is conducted remotely through video conferencing technology, allowing candidates and interviewers to meet face-to-face without being in the same physical location. Since the pandemic accelerated remote hiring, video interviews have become standard at most companies for at least some stages of the process.
Video interviews come in two formats. Live (synchronous) video interviews function like in-person interviews but over platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet. One-way (asynchronous) video interviews present pre-recorded questions on screen, and you record your responses within a time limit — these are often used in early screening rounds for high-volume roles.
For live video interviews, prepare your environment: test your camera, microphone, and internet connection beforehand, choose a quiet room with good lighting (face a window or lamp), set a neutral or tidy background, close unnecessary applications, and have a glass of water, your resume, and notes nearby (but avoid reading from them obviously). Look into the camera lens (not at the person's face on screen) to simulate eye contact. For one-way interviews, practice with the platform's demo mode if available, and treat each response as seriously as you would a live conversation.
